Topaz Legal & Support

Topaz is an AI budgeting app that turns a few chat answers into a working monthly budget and lets you log spending by just describing it. This page is our Privacy Policy, our Terms of Service, and how to reach us — in full, not a summary.

Privacy Policy

What Topaz collects, why, who we share it with, and how you stay in control of it.

What we collect

DataWhy we collect it
Email addressTo sign you in with a one-time login code, and as your account identifier.
Name, city and country, monthly incomeWhat you tell Topaz during setup, so your budget reflects your actual situation.
Budget categories & amountsThe budget Topaz builds for you and that you can edit.
Expenses you logAmount, date, description, and category for anything you record.
Receipt photographs (Premium)If you use receipt scanning, the photo you take or choose is sent to be read. See below for what happens to it.
Google account info (Google sign-in only)Your name, email, and profile photo, provided by Google if you choose to sign in that way.
Subscription status (Premium only)Your plan, billing period, and renewal date, so the app knows what you have paid for.
Early-access signup (this website only)Email and optional name, used to hold your discount code until the app launches.

How your data is used

Your setup answers and the expenses you type or describe are sent, once you have agreed in the app, to third-party AI services (Google and Anthropic, through OpenRouter) to be parsed into a structured amount, description, and category — that's how "$15 on coffee" becomes a logged expense in the right place. This happens through a server we control; the AI provider only sees the text needed to do that one task, never your account credentials or payment details.

Receipt photographs (Premium)

Receipt scanning works by sending an image, so it deserves its own explanation rather than a mention in passing.

  • Topaz asks for camera access only when you choose to photograph a receipt, and photo library access only when you choose to pick one you already have. Decline either and the rest of the app works normally.
  • The photo is resized on your device and sent, through our server, to the same AI provider, which reads the total, date, and merchant off it.
  • We do not store the image. It is used for that one reading and is not kept on our servers. What is saved to your budget is the resulting expense — amount, date, description, and category — not the picture.
  • Any copy that stays in your own camera roll because you took the photo there is yours, and Topaz never touches it.

Payments

If you subscribe to Premium, payment is handled by a third-party payment processor (and, where you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, by Apple or Google directly). Your card details go to them and never reach us: we never see, hold, or store a card number. What we receive back is limited to whether the subscription is active, its billing period, and when it renews or ends — which is what tells the app you have Premium.

Who we share data with

We use a small number of third-party service providers to make Topaz work, and share only what each one needs to do its job:

  • Database and authentication — Supabase, which hosts your account, budget, and expense data.
  • AI processing — OpenRouter, which passes requests from our server to Google (Gemini) and, as a backup, Anthropic (Claude), for building budgets, parsing expenses, and reading receipt photos. The app asks for your permission before it sends anything to them, and they use it only to answer that request — not to advertise to you.
  • Email delivery — used to send login codes and account-related email.
  • Payments — a payment processor and, for in-app purchases, Apple and Google, if you subscribe to Premium.
  • Hosting and infrastructure — Cloudflare, for this website and the early-access signup form.

We do not run ads. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising/tracking SDKs inside the app. We do not sell your data to anyone, for any reason, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the providers listed here who are needed to make the app work.

International data transfers

Topaz and the providers listed above may process and store your data in countries other than the one you live in, including the United States. By using Topaz, you understand that your information may be transferred to, and processed in, countries whose data protection laws may differ from those of your own country.

Where it's stored, and for how long

Your data lives in a Supabase-hosted database, protected by row-level security so your account can only ever read or write its own data — not even Topaz's own backend can query across accounts through the app's normal pathways. Early-access signups from this website are stored separately, in a database used only to issue and look up your discount code.

We keep your data for as long as your account exists. Delete your account and it is removed, along with your profile, budget, expenses, and history. We do not hold a separate copy or a further retention period after that.

Cookies & local storage

Neither the Topaz app nor this website (topazbudget.com) uses cookies, and neither uses any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking technology of any kind — nothing that watches what you do here and reports it elsewhere.

The app does store a small amount of data directly on your own device, using your phone's normal on-device storage rather than a browser cookie: your sign-in session, so you don't have to log in every time you open the app, and your light/dark appearance preference. Neither ever leaves your device except as part of the sign-in itself, and neither is used to track you across other apps or websites.

Children's privacy

Topaz is not directed at, marketed to, or intended for use by children. You must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if that is higher, to use Topaz. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

You can delete your data anytime, and take a copy of it whenever you'd like. Settings has an account deletion that permanently removes everything — your profile, budget, and every expense you've logged — immediately from inside the app, no request to us needed. Want a copy of your data instead? Email us (below) and we'll send it to you.

Your rights and choices

  • Edit or delete your budget categories and expenses at any time from within the app.
  • Request a full copy of your data, in a portable format, by emailing us (below).
  • Delete your entire account and all associated data from Settings.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal data — including the right to access, correct, restrict, or object to certain processing. Contact us (below) to exercise any of these.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Topaz changes. If we make a meaningful change, we will update the date at the top of this page; continuing to use Topaz after a change means you accept the updated policy.

Terms of Service

What you're agreeing to by using Topaz — in full, including the parts nobody enjoys writing.

Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or otherwise using Topaz, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy above. If you do not agree, please don't use the app.

The app

Topaz helps you build and track a personal budget using AI. It is a planning and tracking tool, not financial, tax, investment, or legal advice, and nothing in the app should be treated as such — decisions about your money are yours to make, and yours alone.

Your account

You're responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide, and for keeping access to your email or Google account secure, since that's how Topaz confirms it's you. You're responsible for all activity that happens under your account.

Acceptable use

Use Topaz for its intended purpose — tracking your own personal budget and expenses. Don't attempt to disrupt the service, reverse-engineer it, access another user's data, circumvent any usage limit, or use the app for anything unlawful or fraudulent.

AI-generated content and its limitations

Please read this section carefully. Topaz is an AI product, and AI makes mistakes.

The budgets, category suggestions, expense parsing, receipt readings, and any other AI-generated output Topaz produces are created by third-party AI models. Like all AI systems, they can be inaccurate, incomplete, out of date, or simply wrong — including misreading a receipt total, miscategorizing an expense, mis-stating a cost of living figure, or suggesting a budget that does not actually fit your circumstances. AI output is a starting point and a convenience, not a guarantee of accuracy.

You are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and correcting anything Topaz's AI produces before relying on it. You can always edit a category, correct an amount, or override a suggestion, and you should do so whenever something looks wrong. Topaz and its developer are not responsible for any decision you make, financial or otherwise, based on AI-generated output, and are not liable for any inaccuracy, error, or omission in that output.

Paid plans

Topaz is free to use, and manual expense tracking stays free with no limit. Premium is optional and adds a higher daily allowance for AI-assisted logging and, where available, receipt scanning. The price and billing period are shown to you before you are charged, and any feature still described as coming soon is not part of what you pay for today.

Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled. You can cancel at any time and keep Premium until the period you've already paid for runs out — cancelling does not cut you off early, and we do not provide partial refunds for the unused portion of a billing period except where required by law or by the App Store's or Google Play's own policies. Where you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, your purchase, billing, cancellation, and any refund are handled by them, under their own terms, and not by us directly.

No warranty

Limitation of liability

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Topaz and its developer from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the app, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any right of a third party.

Termination

You can stop using Topaz and delete your account at any time from Settings, with no further obligation. We may suspend or terminate access to the app for anyone who violates these terms, misuses the service, or where we are required to do so by law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws applicable in the jurisdiction where Topaz's developer is based, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles, except where local consumer-protection law gives you rights that cannot be waived, in which case those rights still apply.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Topaz evolves. Meaningful changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date above; continuing to use Topaz after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Severability & entire agreement

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in full effect. These terms, together with our Privacy Policy above, are the entire agreement between you and Topaz regarding the app, and replace any earlier agreement on the same subject.
